I need some help, bloggers. I am completely out of ideas for things to take to lunch. I realized a long time ago that if I'm going to eat healthy things on my daily commute to the land of no restaurants but McDonald's I have to shop beforehand. But I have run out of good ideas. This week, I did a bad job of pre-shopping and ended up eating fast food three days in a row. Yuck. So, lunch packers, what do you take to work? I need things that are relatively easy to prepare. Any suggestions?

I'm a boring lunch packer. I bring a sandwich and pickles to the office most days. If you have issues with slightly soggy bread then the pickle is out. I tolerate the sogginess because I need the extra bit of kick that a spicy polish dill provides. Adding apples, oranges, and bananas and switching the pickle out for carrots is easy enough to do to give you some variety and enough to get full.
Another idea is cabbage-based salads (cabbage won't wilt in heat) that don't have a runny dressing (no one wants a dressing stain on their backpack or car seat). My favorite from this category is a ramen noodle cabbage salad. It has ramen noodles, almonds, green onions, sunflower seeds and cabbage in it. All things that are still good at room temperature. The dressing is oil, vinegar, sugar, and the ramen seasoning in it. There isn't a lot of dressing on the salad, so leaks are kept to a minimum.
On the topic of who the heck I am, I know Dan from his days in crypto class at A&M. I'm mainly here for the occasional story of Dan related antics, but enjoy your other posts as well.

Additional note on salads: If you put the dressing on the bottom of a tupperware dish, the lettuce will stay crispy until you have lunch.
I used to take leftovers from dinner the night before because I'd crave hot food in the middle of the day. If you make a huge pot of soup (crockpots work well for this), then you have lunch for several days. I remember finally rebelling against black bean soup on day four or so. There is only so much soup one can eat! But it freezes well, so that works too.

I have an idea...but it may require planning ahead which is almost against my personal religion: Get the phone # of a 'on the way to work' sushi bar - then on the way home from work, phone in an order to go, pop it in the fridge. Now comes the hard part, no forget that...when you order get extra...eat some when you get home-yeah that`s better...yummm.

Hey y'all. All good ideas ... That's actually a great idea about the sushi, Mom. There's a place pretty close to our house. Thanks for the cabbage salad idea, Tim, and welcome to the blog. I'm glad you read ... Dan is quite entertaining, and I just figure it isn't fair to keep all that laughter to myself. Hey, Becca, I'd be open to any good soup recipes you have, and that's a great tip about the salad dressing on the bottom. OK. I feel like I might have some things to work with now.
