I just talked to Daddy, and he said Aaron is awake!
Mom and Daddy got into town around 12:30 last night and went straight to see Aaron, and it sounds like he was able to talk to them a little then. He has been up and talking to Kelly off and on for a while, although he apparently got confused at one point and asked Kelly to tell him who she was. Daddy said the doctors are slowly taking Aaron's dose of pain medication down this morning so that he can stay conscious, and he is responding really well. He is off the respirator that was regulating his breathing while he was sedated and is getting more and more coherent by the minute. He should be moved out of intensive care and into a private room sometime in the near future. Daddy said Aaron is even giving the doctors and nurses a hard time, which is a good sign that he's still the same old Aaron. This morning, a doctor was checking him out for any respiratory problems while Kelly and Daddy were in the room. Aaron, always the life of the party, introduced the doctor to Daddy and told the doctor "This is where I get my good looks."
Aaron told Daddy that he did wake up enough at some point during the process of being transported back to the United States that someone told him about his leg, so it wasn't a complete shock when he woke up, which is good. However, he was under the impression that his leg was gone above the knee, and was very happy to learn that he still has his knee.
Daddy said he and Mom's flight went really well, which is excellent news in comparison with Kelly, who had a very difficult time getting to Maryland. Kelly will have to tell us the whole story sometime soon, but the short version is that Kelly's flight got cancelled and she was stuck in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania until she overheard two of her fellow passengers discussing their plans to rent a car and drive the rest of the way. Kelly asked them if they would let her ride with them, and so she drove to Maryland in the middle of the night with an F.B.I. agent and a Sweet Potato Queen from New Orleans. You can't make this stuff up, and I'm going to have to hear more of that story later, but in the meantime, I hereby award Kelly the Trooper of the Year award. Daddy said she's getting some sleep now after being awake for more than 24 hours, and is in excellent spirits after talking to Aaron. Her luggage, which was lost in the shuffle of the last few days, has also been found. It's a small blessing, but a really nice one for her, I'm sure.
I hope to talk to everyone again later today, and I will update the site as soon as I do that. Thank you all so much for your prayers. We are elated that Aaron is conscious ... somehow it just didn't mean much for the doctors to tell us he was going to be OK until we could talk to him and know that he's alright. Praise God with us for the blessing of Aaron being awake and upbeat. Haley, Got it on the prayer chain. Thanks again for letting me know. This was a great idea and I'm sure your folks will appreciate it very mucu. Please let Aaron know he's in our thoughts and prayers as he continues to recover. What an inspiration he is! Still quick-witted and upbeat! We love you . Thanks for staying in touch. E

Haley, you are a darling. Prayer chains are going on all over the world. We love ya'll so much and have all of you in our prayers. Where are Hanna and Audrey? I've tried to call them just to let them know we ar praying for them too! And that we can be there in just a short little while if they need ANYTHING! By the way, I am very familiar with the Sweet Potato Queens. I guess I'd be what the SPQs call a wannabe. Kelly gets 3 gold stars and a crown for all she's been through. And I want to know all about her trip with one!

I think Hannah and Audrey are staying with relatives in Hattiesburg right now, Aunt Barb, but I am really not sure. I haven't been able to reach either of them on their cell phones, so let me just take this opportunity to say: Hannah and Audrey, if you are reading this, call me! I can't wait to hear the rest of the SPQ story either. I'm sure it will be a good one. Love to all the Jacksons.

I love the website, what a great way to keep in touch, I am so proud of you, you are really being brave when I know you probably feel like falling apart. Know that we are praying for your entire family, Kelly is such a precious wife!!! I loved her the minute I met her!! My kids are so sad about Aaron and keep asking "can we go see Aaron? they have no clue about distance and intesive care units, its really sweet. Anyway I wont keep you I just wanted to say I love you and tell Aaron, Kelly and your Mom and Dad and girls too!!!!!

I just want to be sure Aaron is the fellow we think we know before we stick our feet in our mouths. Seeing a post from Tessa Hash makes me feel more sure that he is. Did Aaron (and Ryan and Hannah) used to be rec soccer players? Were Aaron and Ryan also soccer referees? (My son Tim and I started referreeing in 1997.) I haven't seen any of them for several years, so I'm a little unsure.
