Ten percent what?

Your Linguistic Profile:

50% General American English
40% Dixie
10% Yankee
0% Midwestern
0% Upper Midwestern

I found this on a friend's blog and thought it was pretty funny. I'm not sure how I scored ten percent Yankee. A lot of people out here tell me that I don't sound very Southern to them. I'm convinced this is because they firmly believe everyone from the South talks like Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts in Steel Magnolias. That is a great movie, but the accents are way overdone and it and a lot of other movies have created bizarre expectations for what a Southern person is "supposed" to sound like. Since I moved away, I also have noticed that my accent tends to come and go. There really is no distinct accent in the Southwest, so anything different stands out, and occasionally someone will ask me where I'm from. When I tell them, they always ask me to say "y'all," and they ask me if it's hot there, and I say "Yes, and it's humid, too." And thus ends the accent conversation. But it always makes me wonder. I never really made a conscious effort to not have an accent and sometimes I worry that I just misplaced it, like you do your keys. But then I'll get really excited or angry about something, or I'll talk to my family on the phone, or I'll tell Dan that I am "fixing" to do something, and then I know that you can leave home, but you can never really "lose" it. That's oddly comforting.

Coz:

I'm fairly certain the 10% Yankee comes from interviewing all the New Yorkers who've moved to New Mexico in search of "space."

Don't ya'll go worryin' yer pretty lil' head none, sugarplum...you still sound like a Daughter of Dixie to me. =)

Andy:

Aaron, I know things have been completely different for you lately, unbearable pain, nobody will leave you alone and everybody giving yoy advise and trying to tell you what to do. Well i am fixing to be in the same pain as you have been in or worse, CHASE IS MOVING BACK HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! This could be one of my worst nightmares ever, Drew and Chase together again topped off with YaYa, I need help, Ya'll need to get back home soon, I don't know how long I will be able to hold on. Alright enough about that, I am just feeling a little sorry for myself. When you get home I am cooking one of those big steaks and boiled shrimp and a couple of bud lights for you, I hear you need to put some weight back on, that should do it. Keely is telling me about you wanting to get a truck, let me know if you want me to help find you one. Don't get in a hurry and give me a couple of weeks to find the best deal. Okay, got to get to work now, hang in there, all of this is almost over. Please be praying for me that I have the strength and patience to withstand what I am about to go through. Talk to you soon, Love you and good luck with Kelly, I know you need help too. Pops

I think the survey must be wrong. Instead of 10% Yankee I scored 5% Yankee, 5% Upper Midwestern. The midwestern I'll blame on the evil influence of my friend from Iowa. The 5% Yankee just can't be. I'd agree with Coz, the bit of Yankee that seems to have crept into your vocabulary is probably from your work.

About "finding" your accent... every roommate I've ever had loved to listen to me call home on the weekend. Apparently the West Texas drawl doesn't show itself until I talk to my family. It is good to know that that will never go away.
