Since I talked to my mom yesterday, I have been unable to get a call through to home, which I assume means there is no phone service. This is totally understandable in light of the devastation in Mississippi, but it's still very stressful to not be able to reach family in the age of cell phones, wireless, and text messaging. I had never realized how spoiled I am by my usual instant access to the people I love. Even though I know my family is OK, it still freaks me out to not be able to talk to them and reassure myself. It's not comforting to watch the news, I've learned.
Please pray for the people in my home. A terrible thing had happened there, and as much as I wish I could fix it, I'm pretty sure I can't.

I talked to Randy following the storm. Looks like they will be out of power for some time and communications are intemittent. Much of Mississippi is out of electricity.
The entire state of Arkansas is seeing folks who have fled the destruction from Katrina. Shelters are opening up as far away as Fayetteville. In our little town of Crossett there are no hotel rooms available and shelters are opening up to accomodate the influx of people. Gasoline shortages are already being reported in the newspapers. Georgia-Pacific cooked lunch yesterday and fed over 400 people from south Louisiana.
Donna and I have opened our home to an extended family. A number of other people have done the same in our neighborhood. There are enough cajuns in my house to start up a festival. Hey, you gotta find humor where you can. They cooked up a wonderful chicken and sausage gumbo yesterday. These are good people with no place to go. Between my house and the house across the street we have about 14 family members including grandpa, grandma, three brothers, in-laws, and a bunch of little kids, and a few pets.
These people are in a bad situation. Most have no idea when they will be allowed to return home or even if they will have a home to return to. Plus they are out of work and living off of savings, credit cards, and the good will of the communities they are at.
The effect from Katrina will be with us a long time and will go down as one of the worst disasters this country has seen.
