A question, readers, and later, I'll give you an answer: When you were a kid, what, if anything, did you do with the cardboard tubes left over after your mom had used up a roll of paper towels?
I ask this because tonight in the children's progam class that Dan and I lead every week at our church, we're going to do a craft with those little cardboard tubes, and I am having seecond thoughts about it because I'm not sure if I was the only kid who grew up having fun with those things.
So if y'all tell me what you thought those were for, and it's not too far off from what me and my siblings used to do with them, I'll tell you all about it.
Let's be honest: Even if y'all never played with a cardboard tube in your life, I'll probably still tell you what we did.

I made mazes for my little hamster.
And occasionally covered one end with wax paper using a rubber band for a homemade Kazoo.
My sister never waited until the foil/wrap/wax paper was gone; she would just drag the roll by an end of the foil like a wagon.
I'll be eager to see what you decide for tonight.

We glued two rolls together and added some string to make binoculars. There are also a ton of lesson plan activities for pre-school and kindergarten age children on the web that incorporate toilet paper rolls.

My siblings and I weren't terribly crafty, so the tubes were usually used as billy clubs for beating one another. The long tubes from wrapping paper were a special treat because then we could have real sword fights.
I believe back in my VBS days we made kaleidoscopes with them. That was a fun time. Coloring for a while and then having something to look at for a minute or two before using it as a weapon. Good times indeed.

Fred says they are correctly named "Doo-dah-doos"
and they were fine weaspons for a misspent youth.
Incidently, He still has a TP length doo-dah-doo roll on the desk - he claims to be waiting to measure it....?
