Further proof that reading is the answer.

There are a lot of parenting things that I don't have strongly-held views about, which is probably good since I have zero credentials to back me up, and I've been told that proclaiming your opinions about child-rearing before you have a child to rear is a really good way to guarantee that you have a child who refuses to conform to your plans. But the one thing I feel safe saying, as a certified English major, is that reading is better than television watching.

So I enjoyed this article. Of course, it kind of makes me laugh that we need a study to tell us that it's not particularly good for kids to watch a lot of TV. But that's why we've got a nice little starter library going for Kate, including such literary classics as "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" and "The Giving Tree."

Which brings me to my point: I keep a running list of books that I want to read, and it's probably realistic to expect for that list to be replaced by books I want to read to Kate for a while. That is totally fine with me, so long as they're good books, but I need some help making the list. So what was your favorite book when you were a kid?

RT:

Books I read in elementary school:
- all the books in the Little House series
- Charlotte's Web
- Little Women

Authors I like for Livia now:
- Eric Carle
- Sandra Boynton
- Margaret Wise Brown

Oooh! I'm so on this one! I've been thinking about reading to Ellie, and here are some of the books I'm excited about sharing with her:

Anne of Green Gables and the follow ons to that, especially Rilla of Ingleside
Some Nancy Drews, because I have very fond memories of my mom reading those out loud to us, (just as she has memories of her dad reading them to her)
The Chronicles of Narnia
The Westing Game

Luke has already called several books, meaning he has claimed the right to read them to Ellie. You can get his list separately. Let's just say that the first time we turned on the Lord of the Rings movies when I was nursing her, he paused it and said "Wait! She hasn't read the books yet!"

Adrian Lowry:

Woohoo! Books! I Loved to be read to and--when I got old enough-- to read!
--Beatrice Potter
--Arthur
--Wind and the Willows (my dad read that to me every night)

Ah! I just can't wait to meet little Kate!

Kate :):

i loved the Ramona books by Beverly Cleary and Charlotte's Web was one of my all-time favorites. in fact, i borrowed it from the school's library when i was a kid and then lost it and felt so bad about it was missing that i made my parents buy a new copy to give to the library. :D

OK, I've been called sappy for this, but I loved the little Golden Book, "My Own Grandpa"--it's just a sweet story:) And of course "The Pokey Little Puppy". And I'm sorry I just put those titles in quotations instead of underlining or italicizing them:-)

My all-time favorites were all read to me as a small child:
-The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander
-A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
-Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper

Kate Drost:

I will be the voice of reason, because while LM Montgomery, Louisa May Alcott and Laura Ingalls Wilder are all ESSENTIAL books for any young girl, lets remember Kate will begin as a infant more interested in eating pages than reading them. So, here are MUSTS for children 6 - 24 months of age.
My Little Book About God (goldenbooks)
God Gave Us You
Corduroy
Guess How Much I Love You
Go Dogs Go
Ten Apples Up on Top (hard cardboard version)
And that is just the beginning...

Well, if we're talking books for babies, then:

But Not the Hippopotamus by Sandra Boynton
Just Me and My Dad by Mercer Meyer
The Saggy Baggy Elephant

Beth Harris:

Well as your former Librarian at CCS in Yazoo, my list could go for pages. But get:
The Little Engine That Could
Dabble Duck
Where the Wild Things Are
I Love You Forever (this one used to make yourMom cry)
Christian Mother Goose

Where the Sidewalk Ends, by Shel Silverstein
The Paper Bag Princess
Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss
