Before I had a child and would think about why I wanted to have one, I am pretty sure that this exact picture came to my mind: Dan with our child on his lap, reading a book after a nice family dinner on a lazy summer evening. On this side of the chasm between my pre-child life and post-child life, I now realize that these moments of idyllic family quiet are few and far between, but they are also sweeter than I ever imagined, even in my most air-brushed fantasies. Of course, I probably thought the book would be a great classic like The Velveteen Rabbit, and not an Elmo pop-up book, but again, that's reality for you.

Isn't there a newly-released children's introductory picture-book pop-up touchy-feely version of Twilight?? :)

I hope you'll blog about your opinion on Twilight. Either you just haven't gotten around to it or you're afraid to be mobbed by rabid teens/tweens/soccer moms if you give the book a less than stellar review. So far, I've only found one other person who shared my dismal view of Twilight and I could use more support.
My friend has been a copy editor for almost 20 years and she happened to have the book with her when we met for lunch one day.
"Sooooo.... what do you think of the book?" I cautiously ask.
"It's AWFUL! I don't think I can force myself to finish it!" she replies, making a face like she just accidentally ate a bug.
"Thank God!" I reply, letting out the breath I'd been holding while I tried to think up some platitudes in case she liked it. "I thought I was the only one who couldn't stand it. It made me throw up a little in my mouth just reading it."
Then we traded witty jabs about the parts we hated most. ha! ;-)
